Scream's Birth Story

Klaw's birth was pretty memorable. Scream proved himself capable of creating his own memorable birth in a completely different manner.

As this pregnancy wound on, I was more than ready for Scream to make his debut. I have mentioned before that I don't do pregnancy well. I was over it. I was in pain. I was still puking. Chiropractic care and zofran did what they could to ease my discomfort but I knew nothing would completely ease the discomforts of pregnancy except giving birth.

We finally got around to replacing the vanities in our master & guest bathrooms on April 12, 2013. Scream's estimated due date was April 16, so I knew we were cutting it close but I wanted the bathrooms finished. The guys doing the work arrived around 10am and started on the guest bathroom. They asked me how close to giving birth I was and I told them to not be surprised if my water broke.

Looks good, though!

I went about my business washing clothes & cleaning up around the house.

Around 1pm, I was walking into the master bath and, lo & behold, my water did actually break. Thankfully, Klaw, at 3, is old enough to follow basic commands like "bring mama a towel, please. Yes, that one. Please bring it to mama. Thank you, baby."  I texted my doula, Amara, to let her know my water had broken. I wasn't feeling any contractions yet, so I decided to continue doing stuff around the house. I mean, I was in labor with Klaw for over 20 hours. I wasn't in any hurry. I did tell Chris that he might want to head home.

Within the hour, I started having mild contractions. They were immediately pretty close together which caused me a little concern but, again, I was in labor for 20+ hours with Klaw. I really wasn't worried.  Chris got home and shortly after that, the guys working on the bathroom said that if they started on the master bath, it would be several hours before they finished it so they wanted us to decide if we wanted them to stop for the night or go ahead & get started.

Obviously, even though I wasn't worried about giving birth anytime soon, I wasn't dumb enough to go ahead & let them rip out our sink in the master bath. I did want to soak in the tub, so that would have been really awkward for everyone involved had they stayed...

By this time, the contractions were picking up in intensity. I had been texting Amara off  & on, keeping her up to date on how things were going.  Suddenly, a series of contractions hit that were different. I instinctively knew things were different. I had Chris text Amara & let her know.

I also had Chris call my midwife to let her know I was  in labor. Now, I didn't want him to tell her my water had broken because I knew she'd want me to head on to the hospital and I was still worried it was way too early. I wanted to labor at home as long as possible. I did not clearly explain this to Chris, so that was the first thing out of his mouth. I got MAD!!! SO MAD! I couldn't believe he didn't read my mind and now we had to go on to the hospital.

One of my friends picked up Klaw and we headed out around 3pm.

At the hospital, Chris parked at the main entrance, clearly marked only for drop-off & pick-up (this becomes important later*). We enter the hospital. I'm stopping every couple of minutes to work through a contraction while Chris pushes the wheelchair carrying my bags. People stop & ask if I'm okay. I just wave & say "pregnant."

We finally get to the maternity floor & I have to fill out paperwork. I make Chris give me the birthing ball so I can sit on it through contractions while I'm filling out the paperwork.  Throughout all of this, I'm still worried that we are at the hospital way too early.

I get settled in the room and the nurse wants to check dilation.

Yeah, I was already dilated to 8.

Obviously, my fears of getting to the hospital too early were completely unfounded.

This also explained the intensity of the contractions I was having. The best way to describe what I was feeling was a knife being shoved in both of my hips & twisted. Repeatedly.

They didn't get any less intense, for the record. I wanted to push so badly but I was told I couldn't. The only way I knew to stop myself from pushing was to cross my legs. Tightly.  No, it wasn't comfortable but it was the only thing that worked. Amara suggested I try another position, so I got on my hands and knees and OH MY GOD I felt the sharpest, worst pain ever. I thought my hips were breaking.

I clearly remember stating several times, "Jesus H Christ this hurts so bad. This hurts so bad, Amara."

I rolled back over and said the magic words, "I feel like I need to poop."

Amara called my nurse back in so she could check my dilation. She began to check and immediately yelled for my midwife to come it. It was showtime!

Three minutes later, Scream entered this world.

brand spankin' new baby

Yes, three whole minutes of pushing after five and half hours of labor. Yes, it was intense but I would choose fast & furious over long & exhausting like Klaw's birth any day of the week.

Scream is now almost 5 months old. He doesn't have VLCADD. He is growing like a champ and Klaw is the best big brother a little boy could ask for. Thank you to everyone who is reading this. I know my blog has taken a back seat for the past  year+.

*edited to add: Chris ended up leaving the car parked right in front of the hospital's main entrance for 24 hours. Thankfully, our hospital is pretty small & laid back. We didn't even have a ticket. I'm guessing this has happened before.

PHOTOBOMB: Celebrating Christmas

We started the Christmas season by visiting Busch Gardens for their Festival of Lights over Thanksgiving break.  Klaw enjoyed his first exposure to theme park rides but he did not enjoy waiting in lines. At all.

For Christmas, we were all happy. Klaw liked everything he received, as evidenced by his facial expressions. Chris got the watch he's been wanting & I got a new boyfriend.

I hope everyone had a blessed holiday with friends & family.
May your new year be full of light and happiness.

35

Today, I am 35 years old.  I have no problem admitting my age and I've never really understood the dread some people face with each birthday.  I guess the whole "I'm one day closer to the long sleep" is kind of depressing in one sense, but I don't know. I don't think of  it like that.

This is what I looked like 35 years ago.
Don't worry, I'm not all "Grow old gracefully? Why, I'm fighting it every step of the way," either.  It's just another day with the added bonus that
IT'S ALL ABOUT ME AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME ANYTHING DIFFERENT!!!!
See? All about me.

Anyways, you may have noticed some changes to the blog.  For my birthday, I have revamped my blog design.  It's an ongoing process, so there may will be some more subtle changes along the way but I wanted to get something up over the weekend.  I'm still learning and I'm not exactly the most visually creative person in the world.  This is a touch out of my comfort zone, but I'm fairly pleased so far.

Dad, Grandpa, Leslie & 2 yr old DANA!

I'd like to thank Kate from Mommy Monologues (& 2711 Designs) for helping me find the tree image in iStock and helping me develop a direction for the update.  (She's on a break from blogging & blog design right now)  I also want to point out that the branded social media links for Facebook, Twitter, etc in the sidebar on the right are free images courtesy of Icon Dock. Eli Rose Social has a great tutorial for adding social media icons to your blog, plus links to other free images.

This is my 3rd or 4th birthday. The frog is "Fleegle."

Later this evening, my sister is babysitting Klaw so that Chris & I can go out to eat at some fancy pants restaurant and just worry about feeding ourselves.  We don't get out much with out HULKSMASH Klaw, so this will be a nice treat.

Oh, my 2nd birthday cake is my earliest memory.  Those Disney characters had different shapes under their feet and I remember licking the icing out of them.  That's it.

25th Birthday in Charleston

30th birthday in Monterey

What's your favorite birthday memory?  I have plenty of terribly embarrassing birthday memories, but I'd like to focus on the positive today since this is some sort of milestone.

WTH is wrong with my face?

Happy Freaking 4th of July!

In celebration, my face has decided to explode.

Baby, you're a firework.

Here's a picture of Chris & me decked out for the 4th of July in 2009.  (maybe TMI, but there was possibly some cell reproduction taking place at this time).

This is Klaw and me last year at the local 4th of July celebration.  Chris wasn't home but we still had a good time.

Annnnnd...

This is my big fat swollen face July 4th, 2011.

I may not leave the house today.

(FYI - the inside of my mouth & my throat are not experiencing any difficulties. If the swelling spreads, I will definitely leave the house to go to the ER)

7/7/11 - Update - mild to moderate allergic reaction to SOMETHING. Five days of prednisone & benadryl as needed. My face & back have already broken out with acne. Thank you, prednisone, I hate you, too.  I mean, thank you for helping the swelling go down.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

It's Military Spouse Appreciation Day!

Presidential address to military spouses

I could wax on about everything we military spouses do to keep the home fires burning while our spouses "weave the blanket of freedom y'all sleep so comfortably under every night,"* but I won't.  I will ask you to thank a military spouse at some point today, though.

It's not easy.  It's not easy to say goodbye to your husband & wife and not know exactly where they are or when you will hear from them again.  It's not easy dealing with the aftermath of children & pets (yes, pets!) who aren't able to understand the bigger picture of why mom or dad has to be gone for weeks, months, or even years.  It's not easy not being able to talk about what your spouse is doing or when your spouse will be returning.

The hardest part for me right this very second is cleaning my house.  So, if you feel compelled to thank me, actions speak louder than words, mmmkay?  Please come over & clean my house.  Please?  Pretty please?

I'll buy you cupcakes.  Beer?  Pizza?  You name it.  Just clean my house.

My brother-in-law (once removed?) is mowing my lawn today...but he doesn't clean houses.

That's our Golden Retriever standing in the grass.

My Green Cred is in Jeopardy!

I almost freaking forgot about Earth Day!  Thank you, Twitter, for reminding me!  Yes, Facebook, I'm sure if I wasn't on hiatus from you, you would have told me, too.  Jealousy doesn't become you, so calm down.

I've been following The Animated Woman on Twitter for a couple of weeks now.  She is a delight & seriously, too stinkin' cute.  I hope that doesn't offend her because "too stinkin' cute" is one of the highest compliments I ever give.  Check out her blog to see some of her work.  The Animated Woman created a lovely video for Earth Day.  It's simple, short and poignant...and I really liked it so I'm hoping you'll take about 30 seconds to watch it, too.

I also hope you'll check out the Earth Day posts from two of my other favorite bloggers, Ani from The Simple Single Mom and Nicole from Flip Flops & Combat Boots.

Here are my two easiest ways to introduce a little more "green" into your life starting today, Earth Day 2011:

1 - Recycle. Seriously. Most communities offer curbside pick-up, even if you have to pay a little bit to have it.  If you can't/won't pay for curbside pick-up, there is usually a drop off location in the vicinity.  It's an extra half hour of your week (or 2 weeks).  Quit making excuses and just do it.

2 - Compost. You don't have to get all crazy with a huge, expensive compost bin. Even just keeping your oil/meat free scraps to the side when you are preparing dinner can be a good start.  Find a corner in your yard & dump it there.  My Nana didn't get fancy, she just had a little "kitchen scraps" dump site. Our house in Washington had a corner where we just dumped the raked leaves & food.  Now, we have a re-purposed wine barrel (of course we use a wine barrel) with holes Chris drilled into the sides. It works great & we bought it cheap from a local winery.  I made one in Charleston from chicken wire & metal garden posts for next to nothing in cost (anybody who knew me in Charleston knows I was broke as a joke, so this was definitely cheap).

Okay - if you are shaking your head about all of this Earth Day nonsense or if you just like a good dose of sarcasm, you may want to go over to Jamie's blog for Friday's Survival Sarcasm: Easter & Earth DayPossibly, NSFW.

Wesleyan College: A Pictorial

Hail, Wesleyan, thou emblem of all that is grand;

The noblest, the greatest, in all our fair land.

Thine ideals are honored, thy name always blest;

A fountain of knowledge, the oldest and best.

A star in the dark is thy glorious past,

Forever and ever thy glory shall last.

Upholding thine ideals, thy daughters shall be

True, faithful, and loyal, dear Wesleyan, to thee.

Give Me Chips & Dip Or Give Me Death!!!

I woke up early & Klaw is still miraculously sleeping. *knock on wood* This almost always leads me on a Google search of random knowledge.  Today, with one eye open and one hand clasping a coffee mug, I managed to find some random holidays.  Well, one of the holidays isn't all that random since it's actually an historical event.

So folks, here you have it:  March 23 is Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death Day AND Chips & Dip Day.  I'm not kidding.  It's a twofer!  With this packaged deal, you can celebrate Patrick Henry convincing the Virginia House of Burgesses to commit troops in the War for Independence while munching on your favorite chips & dip duo.

I don't think you can go wrong with any particular potato chip - but I would stick with a potato chip.  It's really an American invention and it seems prudent to stick to an American theme on this historic day.  As for dips, this could get tricky.  What's the most American dip out here?  Since Patrick Henry's speech took place in Virginia, should you choose a Virginia favorite?  I haven't had enough coffee yet to make such a monumental decision.  I hope you have a much easier time.

Have a great day & enjoy yet another American excuse to eat in excess!

Righting Past Wrongs

Several years ago, while Chris & I were living in California, Jimmy Buffett had a show in San Francisco right around the time of our anniversary. I had the Ticketmaster page open & all Chris needed to do was enter our debit card information & click "submit."

Evidently, that hint was not obvious enough.

I just found out that Jimmy Buffett is coming to Virginia Beach this May. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10am.

Chris - this is your chance to right a past wrong & make me finally shut up about San Francisco.

Update 12MAR2011: Jimmy Buffett tickets did not actually go on sale at LiveNation until 10:20am EST.  Yes, I sat there & refreshed the page for 20 minutes. I immediately tried to purchase tickets and failed.  The General Admission/Lawn tickets are $30 apiece ($46 with fees) and the scalpers are selling those tickets for $114 apiece ALREADY!!!  Sorry.  As much as I love Jimmy Buffett, I am not spending $228 on two tickets.

Klaw's Christening

WOO HOO!!!  YIPPY SKIPPY!!!  The boy-child has finally been Christened!  This was our third and final attempt to get this accomplished.  Yes, I will readily admit that I had a few stipulations that added to the difficulty of getting this accomplished, but the Navy & Klaw's VLCADD did not help.

Photobomb: Christmases Past

I'm sorry I've been so slack about updating the blog.  It's been incredibly busy since Thanksgiving...from doctor appointments, housecleaning, car repairs, car repairs that messed up other stuff, rescheduling Klaw's christening before making sure we had a house/pet-sitter (still not confirmed), parties, shopping, etc.  Writer's block has also halted the next "Debt Freedom" post for far too long.  So, to make up for lost time...here's a photobomb of Christmases past...I hope you enjoy it.

No Jinxes, Please

Well, Klaw was discharged from the hospital this past Thursday.  We spent a long weekend just relaxing around the house and trying to get back to a "normal" schedule.  Oddly enough, our happy little wake up at the crack of dawn baby is now a happy little wake up about an hour before the crack of dawn baby. This does not bode well for me!

Many thanks to all of you have kept us in your thoughts & prayers during this stressful time.  We have truly been blessed with wonderful friends & family and, of course, a wonderful baby boy.

Livin' Like No One Else!!!!! In the beginning...

It's finally happened...8 years in the making...plenty of ups & downs & falling off the debt wagon along the way...

WE'RE DEBT FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! except for the house, which is A-OK in the world of Dave Ramsey and our family!

I am so excited and so relieved that this has finally happened and I'd like to share our journey.  Hopefully, it can be an inspiration to others who are saddled with debt, big or small.  I can be a bit long-winded, so I'm going to split this up into installments.

***********************************

When Chris & I met, he was a brand new JO in the Navy and I was working 50+ hours a week just to gross a whopping $14.500/year.  Both of us had school loans & a car loan apiece and Chris had some credit card debt leftover from his college days.  I won't go into detail about Chris's portion (he can feel free to talk about his on his own), but we split the total debt of just under $100,000 pretty evenly.

My school loans totaled a little over $30,000 and my car loan at that time was about $13,000.  Because I made next to nothing in income, my loans were in deferment building up interest all along the way.  Some of you know that I went to a small, private college for my undergraduate degree - well, I left Wesleyan without any debt.  My school loans were for graduate school where I took out the living allowance.  I mean, they offered it so I might as well take it, you know?  2 semesters later, I had a B+ in my sole completed course to show for it.  $30,000+ for ONE class.  Can you say, "stupid tax with zeros behind it?"

We moved to upstate New York for Chris to complete some Nuke training with the Navy a month after we got married.  I got a job at a local daycare.   Needless to say, it didn't take long for us to realize we were barely scraping by.  I pretty much have a pathological fear of being broke and I could see us heading there rapidly.  The very first step to debt freedom came out of basic necessity.  We could barely afford our car payments.  We had to make a decision:  keep Chris's nice, new Explorer SportTrac and sell my car OR sell his Explorer and buy a less expensive, more gas-efficient car.  Chris's favorite (hahahahaha) car entered our lives at this point - his champagne beige Pontiac Grand-Am.  The granny-mobile (no offense to grannies, but Chris was mortified to have to drive this vehicle) became a VERY motivating factor for Chris to get out of debt.

At this point, thanks to the vehicle changes, we were making enough to live on and we were living cheaply, but we were not yet making the necessary decisions & sacrifices to actually get us out of debt.  We had merely stabilized our situation, so at least things were no longer getting worse.
